I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
For those arriving here from social media, I apologize for repeating some information. For those who found this page intentionally—or by chance—this is where the story begins.
My first gratitude goes to the atmospheric photographer Mark T. Power. Without his recommendation on social media, I would never have embarked on this deep and silent journey through I Who Have Never Known Men. Because books are always worth the journey. Thank you.
Jacqueline Harpman’s novel is a true page-turner—a dystopian story driven less by action than by atmosphere. It follows the lifelong journey of thirty-nine women and a child across a seemingly deserted landscape. The story is told through the eyes of the youngest member of the group, who has never known the world that existed before their imprisonment and the life that followed.
I was captivated by the quiet power of the novel. It stayed with me long after I had finished reading, and I found myself speaking about it with genuine enthusiasm. During one of those conversations, my stepfather suggested that perhaps I should channel those feelings into art—a series of illustrations inspired by Jacqueline Harpman’s story.
My second gratitude therefore belongs to my wonderful stepfather, Tamás. Without his encouragement, these illustrations would never have come into existence.
