When creating my paintings and visual artworks, the language of the inner world I live in often influences their titles. In the case of my latest watercolour painting, Lost in Thought, both the mood and the title first emerged in Hungarian.
In this case, the artwork emerged from a Hungarian way of thinking. The Hungarian concept of merengés—a state of quiet contemplation—is, for me, best expressed in English through the phrase Lost in Thought. Through the woman’s gaze, posture, and the space created among the clouds, I deliberately sought to depict contemplation rather than reverie.
The original Hungarian title contains an additional detail that was not carried over into English: Merengő nő cigarettával (Contemplative Woman with a Cigarette). I felt that including this detail in the English title would distract from the overall atmosphere of the artwork, yet it remains an essential part of the painting.
